Cairo Alcohol
Posted: Sun March 23, 2008 07:38 PM UTC
I will be traveling to Cairo in a few weeks and was wondering if there are places to buy alcohol (liquor store) in Cairo itself, not the airport or hotel bars.

I won’t pretend to be a Cairo expert but a quick look on the net came up with this:

http://www.touregypt.net/featurestories/boozer.htm

The info is from late 2005 but it might still be useful:

There are both bars and shops selling the stuff, including an astonishing range og genuine Egyptian whiskies with names very similar to well-known scotch whiskies. Try the area near the top of Talaat Harb.

Yes FEW shops will sell it. However, it is preferably to buy your -let say ration- from the duty free shops either upon arrival or within 48 hours as of arrival, otherwise you will be paying due tax.

I doubt if there is a local whisky, but you can find local beer.

My personal advice -if I am permitted, is to spend a vacation without being drunk ha ha ha isn't it better? For sure it very personal issue....

Enjoy your stay!
Welcome to Egypt!

Apart from "Auld Stag" from "Drinkies" (Al Ahram Beverage Company),
and which tastes Nothing like Scotch, there is no such thing as
"genuine Egyptian whisky"...!!!!
The "Jonnie Watker", "White Horus" etc.. etc.. referred to by another poster
are liable to have had their alcohol levels raised by the addition of
Ethyl Glycol(antifreeze..!!), so stay well away from anything that has a
"similar" label to what you would find back home..!!!
ANSWER... If you're here for a short while, visit the "duty free"...

That's true, I've tried similar in other parts of the world and not only do they usually taste bad but they damage you too, be careful.........

Listen to me! Try an alcohol free vacation! I still advise, in case you still insist, take your ration from the duty free upon arrival. However, in sharm el sheikh there is an egyptian factory, but again for beer.....

Why add ethyl glycol when ethanol is cheaper?? I'm sure the bogus brands taste nasty but I'm sure that it's nothing but C2H5OH. Some badly made distilled drinks may contain methanol (CH3OH) but I never heard of actually adulterating the stuff.

Whatever is added to Egyptian reproductions of well known brands: JUST STAY AWAY OF IT!! It is poison!

I have no idea where to buy beverages or liquor in Cairo, but there was a similar thread a few weeks ago on this same page. Adresses were given there!

And, my dear sadique Sayed, I do go with you! You will enjoy Egypt more if you are staying low on the alcohol side, but 1 or 2 Stella's wont spoil a thing....

Hey, Longtone, try the local brands at your own risk....
Two Americans and one Brit died "trying them out" a few
years ago.....
