You got me interested too, I found this on the net:
Box Jellyfish Swarm Once a Month in Hawaii Box jellyfish cause the most problems for swimmers in Hawaii eight to twelve days after a full moon, but swimmers might occasionally encounter them at other times also. They are most frequently seen on the west and south shores of the islands. To find out if jellyfish are a problem on a particular beach, Look for jellyfish on the beach along the waterline, read all posted signs, and talk to local lifeguards. There is an excellent site which will tell you everything you want to know http://www.808jellyfish.com/

We were told around ten days after a full moon heed the warnings posted on the beaches.

The consensus is that any day could be a Box Jellyfish day in the Hawaiian waters. Where do you think they disappear to after the dates of the month they are suppose to be around the beaches? Dates are the 9-11 day after a full moon. Just a little off shore, that's where. The best thing to do is look for the Jellyfish Warning at the beaches, look along the shoreline where sand meets the sea (Remember, even a dead Box Jellyfish can sting), and when swimming, look for the floating mass, looks like facial tissue, it might be a jellyfish. If you make contact with a jellyfish, pour white vinegar on it (Yes, I always bring a small plastic bottle of white vinegar to the beach) and get to a hospital for a once over. Some will suggest meat tenderizer for the area of the sting, and others will just say, *** on it. BTW, Box Jellyfish can actually swim. Da Dum.....Da Dum...DA DUM!!! Shades of "Jaws". Not funny, if you get stung. The best rule of thumb is to always be aware of your surroundings. Welcome to paradise. Aloha!
