Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Cancún Transportation around the Yucatan region
Posted: Sun March 23, 2008 04:17 PM UTC
Hi,

As part of a trip through the Americas I will be in Mexico in late August (not ideal because of the hurricane season but that's just the way it worked out).

Q.1 I only have 6 days in the Yucatan region. I would like to go to Cancun, Tulum, Valladolid and Chichen Itza. Is it easy enough to get transport between these areas or is it recommended to book ahead, if so how.

Q.2 Should I be worried that I will be there during Hurricane season? How often do they occur?

Thanks

Hi Luluzuton,

I just got back from a 7 day trip to the Yucatan that included the Cancun region, Valladolid, Chichen Itza and a few other spots (Merida and Uxmal), so I'd say 6 days is doable.

The easiest way to get between cities/destinations in the Yucatan is to take a public bus. The bus from Cancun to Valladolid takes 2 to 3 hours (around 2 if you take a fast first class bus, 3 if you take a second class bus, which makes more stops). From Valladolid to Chichen Itza is around 45 minutes by bus. You could also rent a car, but we had no problem with the buses.

No need to book ahead-- I was there during one of the busiest weeks of the year, Easter week, and never had trouble getting on a bus.

I can't really speak to the hurricane season question-- I guess any time you travel between August and October that's a risk, but probably a slight one.

Enjoy your time there-- I certainly did!
Diana

the only leg that you may consider booking ahead of time is on a 1st class bus. but you can just go to any bus station and get this ticket. if you are on your own it shouldn't be too difficult.

to tulum there are many 1st and 2nd class buses as well as vans w/ a change in playa del carmen.

hurricane season is entirely unpredictable. but the yucatan is pretty well set up in case it happens and if one does, you can just go inland.

If your talking about tours you can catch a Valladolid/Chichen Itza tour on a great bus for about $75.00 US including admission & tour guide. Another tour to Tulum/Xel Ha. A day at Xcaret. A day at Isla Mujeres and a day at the beach. Party at night.

Q1...As mentioned before, fairly easy to complete.
Q2...Hurricane season is from June to October with the most frequent months for hurricanes being August and September. Check the National Hurricane Center website just before you head that way and every couple of days while down there. They have easy to read info and give frequent updates on the expected path of the storm(s).
