Regarding the train, check: www.trenitalia.it. Once in Florence: Santa Maria Novella church, Duomo/Cathedral and baptistery, Santa Croce church, Piazza and Palazzo de la Signoria, Ponte Vecchio, Palazzo Pitti, if you have time, Piaaza Michelangelo, the strees, and if you like, Galleria Uffizi and Galleria Accademia (in both cases, book in advance to avoid long queues.

http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html is the train website in English. No need to book tickets in advance online (although you can if you wish) but do make sure you validate (stamp) them before you get onto the train using the yellow machines on the platform. The journey takes 1h17m upwards, depending on train time. Do allow plenty of exttra time for getting back to your ship: it won't wait for you!

Florence is very compact and walkable: the Duomo is only about 10 minutes from S. M. Novella. You will be able to see much of the central city in a day, although you won't have time to visit inside everywhere.

Visiting the Uffizi and/or the Accademia will eat into your time substantially, so if you are determined to do this then you must definitely book online beforehand. There are lots of sites if you google, such as www.florenceart.it

Have a look at the VT Florence pages for ideas, information and tips.
