Hello again Civic ! This is a very popular area queations are asked and answered on all the time take a look ath the Travel Guide and at some of the recent Forum questions to get a fel for the area. Of course if you are of aliterary mind you will want tolook up Wordsworth's Cootage and perhaps Beatrix Potters too.

The lake District is one of my favourite places in the UK. i have made a page about it and we usually go at least once a year. Ambleside is a lovely (but sometimes VERY busy) town, which is situated at the head of Windermere. Here you will find some of the countries most spectacular scenery. In this small area of 231 square kilometres are the countries highest peaks, deepest valley and its longest lakes. Here the signs of the last ice age can be seen, the landscape was shaped 10,000 years ago. There are lots of good places to eat and drink. Ambleside is beautiful and really worth a visit but it can get terribly busy in the summer months. So parking can be a problem although there are several car parks around the town.. The Bridge House, probably the star attraction in Ambleside, was built in the 1700's. It was originally a garden house and apple store at the foot of Ambleside Hall, before the new road was built in 1833. Beleive it or not this little building wasin the 1850's home to a basketmaker and his family of 6 children... it is tiny and at that time it had no amenities.Watch your head when going around inside if you are tall. It is in the middle of the town of Ambleside Visit the bridge house which is owned by the National trust but once was home to a family.
Grasmere is lovely, small but charmy . it is of course famous because of its association with William Wordsworth, who lived most of his life at Dove Cottage and later at Rydal mount. He and his family are buried in St. oswalds church in the village. Even without Wordsworth Grasmere is well worth visiting, it is in the middle of wonderful scenery and close to the waters front of Grasmere. The centre is small and like all Lake District places it can get very busy. There are a few nice shops and the very famous Gingerbread shop. Dove Cottage is the lovely home of the poet William Wordsworth in Grasmere. He and family lived there for some of his most creative years. In the barn behind is a museum with belongings of the poet. It does get very busy in the high season but it is worth visiting,

2 of the best drives in the Lake District are the Honister Pass & the drive along Wastwater in the Western Lakes. If you do Honister don't miss the visitor centre at the top : http://www.honister-slate-mine.co.uk/ & the Wasdale Head inn is a great place to stop for a drink & a bite to eat at the end of Wastwater - England's deepest lake.
Grizedale Forest is great in good weather - for more info : http://www.forestry.gov.uk/forestry/infd-5k2b6b
You could also look at www.golakes.co.uk for more inspiration. Hope the weather is on your side, Darren.

I can recommend Ees Wyke Country House as a wonderful place to stay. Breakfast is included in your stay and it is excellent with everything imaginable on the menu.
Ees Wyke also offers a 5 course dinner which I highly recommend. It is a bit costly but well worth it.

See my hotel tip on my England page for photos if you like.
