One more question. Are US dollars acceptable in Playa and Mayan Riv? What is easiest for shopping? Are both equally popular?

You can use either one, I prefer to use their currency as you get a better exchange rate typically and it is the local currency. I had no trouble finding an ATM in Playa

they tend to always change things at 10 pesos/dollar in playa del carmen. that means you have to use the system to your advantage.
If they give you the price in dollars, say $5, pay 50 pesos. that ends up a little cheaper for you. if the price is in pesos, pay in pesos too. i guess it's better to have pesos then. i always use pesos in playa del carmen. and the exchange rate is pretty bad there so i think it's better to get money from the machines.
