Is is ok to visit the Egyptian Museum on your own or is it better to go with a tour guide to show you the important bits?

If you really want to learn and appreciate the significance of each of the artifacts on display then a guide would be best, especially since there are some items that have no labels as to their identity and meaning.

It is up to you. You may even read labels or get a guide book. A guide may facilitate a lot, as it is his/her job, if you like.

it is better you do it on your own...dont forget to take the self help guide / recorder at the reception..it supports multiple languages and it gives you a good insight into the major artefacts & galleries.

I agree. And you take your time. There's a fair guide book of the Museum in a book shop outside the museum, at the corner across from the gate. Costs LE200.
Mind you, to see the 2 Mummy rooms you must pay and extra fee of LE100 (museum ticket is LE35 or 40, can't tell right now as I don't have the ticket at hand.
