| Boston | How's the weather? Posted: Sat March 22, 2008 06:05 AM UTC
Hi Alan and everyone!
We are definitely getting excited...we leave on Tuesday. Needless to say, my house is a disaster area with suitcases and piles of clothes everywhere! I need to say thank you to all of you who have answered all of my (sometimes "silly") questions about weather, clothes, shopping... I posted to another website that my friend recommended and some of the people on the other board were not very nice and posted rude insults (although some were helpful also). So thank you! According to the forecast, it seems colder than expected. Is it in the 30s? BRRRRR! I'm scared! :) You know what happened to my friend that's traveling with me? She tried on her layers just to see what it would feel like and the coat she bought couldn't close. She leaves tomorrow and is just so upset. She gets there on Easter Sunday and can't find anywhere that's open that she can pick up another coat (all the stores here only have Spring and Summer clothes). thanks again and please keep me up to date on the weather in the next few days. kali |

From Tuesday into the weekend it should be in the 40's to the 50's. Some light snow possible on Wednesday but still in the mid 40's. At those temps she likely won't need all her layers or she can leave the coat unbuttoned. Don't worry, it will all come together and you will have a terrific time!
I am sure everyone here appreciates the "Thank you". We have a great time helping each other out with information. It is always nice to feel appreciated. Now don't forget to log on and update us about your trip, we want to hear about it and see your tips!

As you've heard, it will be in the 40's while you're here. That's a little below average for this time of year, but what are you going to do? We're "antsy" about that, too. That's where those layers come into play. They don't have to be THICK layers, though. Each one comes with a "free" insulating layer of air - that the secret to making it work. So thin is okay, so you're coat WILL button. And the store will be open early Monday. Hope you have a great time!!

Depending on what the 'layers' consist of, it may not matter that the coat doesn't close as long as it will close without the layers. I don't usually close my coat anyway. Of course, I am fat enough that I can squish myself into things that are maybe a little too small also <g>
I will often wear a turtleneck shirt, and over that wear a cardigan sweater and over that wear a thermal vest in temperatures in the upper 30s and don't even bother with a coat. This would be in January in NC, so farther south than Boston but also at a colder time of the year. Have your friend bring a hat or scarf for her head (to keep the heat from escaping out the top of the head), and possibly gloves.

Hi all,
Thanks again for the info. I'm a little confused now...I think my friend and I have been asking too many people. But that's okay, worst thing is that we'll have overpacked and I hope that she doesn't end up having to buy another coat. I called and left her a message to wear the thinner layers so she can button the coat, but I think she was already on the plane. When we first started asking, everyone said "layers" and people even elaborated on the layers (3 layers: 1 polyester wicking layer, a long sleeve shirt and a coat-on the warmer side). We were okay with that thinking that our little ones would wear their swimming rash guards as their wicking layer and that we'd wear those stretchy polyester tops, then a long sleeve t-shirt or light sweater, then our coat. Then, a few weeks ago when we asked about weather (I think it was on the board that she found), a bunch of people mentioned wearing "fleece" which we took to mean sweatshirts (or something thicker than a t-shirt), so we changed our layers to a wicking layer, t-shirt, fleece then the coat... which is how she got so stuffed that she couldn't close her coat! :) Happy Easter everyone!

It is all subjective. You will be fine with the layers you have. If I remember correctly the advice about fleece or hooded sweatshirts was more in the spirit of your being able to take off your coats as the day warmed but have all layers for a very cold night.

Bear in mind that sweatshirts make great souvenirs and they sell everywhere on the streets at reasonable prices. You can buy a "hoodie" for around $20 from a street vendor. So you could always do that if you wanted. Most folks buy them anyway even if they don't need them for warmth.
