You should certainly take your papers with you. If you are stopped by the police (for any reason, anywhere) not having your papers could make life very difficult, especially as you are not an EU citizen.
If you are worried about safety buy a moneybelt to keep your papers in. It will go under your clothes, around your waist. You could also scan your papers into a computer (or at least note down numbers, dates etc) and email them to yourself, so you have the information available if needed.

1) If by any chance "i am bot europeen citizen but i am living in italy as a student" means you are NOT an EU citizen, you have no choice but to travel on your passport because even if you have an Italian residence card, this is only valid in Italy.
2) You can only ever travel on an ID document issued by the country of which you are a citizen. This means that Italian citizens can travel within the EU (and some other countries) on their Italian ID cards, but non-Italians cannot; and a German living in Italy could travel on a German ID card, but not an Italian one. Certain EU citizens who could otherwise travel within the EU on national ID cards have to use passports instead because their countries don't issue ID cards (UK, Ireland). 3) Travelling within the Schengen area (as you are, between Italy, Austria and Germany) there are no systematic passport checks at borders, but the border police have the possibility of making spot checks anywhere any time so you cannot simply assume that you don't need a passport. In addition, most continental countries require everyone to carry valid ID (issued by their own country) at all times, which you would have to produce, for example, in the event of an accident. Therefore, it is not safe to travel WITHOUT your passport (and your Italian residence card, if you have to carry this in Italy). 4) It is, however, a good idea to make photocopies of all your official documents and take these along too, it makes it much easier if you ever have to replace the originals.
