Dubrovnik Dubrovnik to Podgorica, Montenegro
Posted: Fri March 21, 2008 07:48 AM UTC
I wish to travel by car from Dubrovnik to Podgorica. It appears there are two routes - one down the coast to Kotor then on to Podgorica. The other inland via Niksic. Can anyone give me info on which is the better route, is the inland route mountainous, and what would be the drive time involved?

Dubrovnik via Nikšić to Podgorica is 142km. Dubrovnik via Kotor is approx 10km longer. Check www.viamichelin.com and routes and maps. The route via Kotor is much nicer as you drive along the coast, the vista is amazing and you can also make a stop in Budva which is worth stopping in for couple of hours at least.

Thank you for your reply. In August I have to drive to Podgorica to pick up some friends then return to Dubrovnik. I would prefer not to travel the same route, and as we will be making the return journey via the coast, I would like to use the inland route via Niksic for the outward trip. I have heard that the inland route is mountainous and treacherous. Do you know if this is true?
Kind regards,
Steve (boro11)

The road in that direction is a minor road, probably not much traffic except "farm" traffic which can slow you down. It goes over a mountain ridge, and I reckon it's not in an extremely good condition and that means you should be careful. I couldn't find any info in regard if the road was "fixed" in the meantime (I was there ages ago). Maybe finding someone from Montenegro on VT would be more helpful as they probably know more about current state.

I have driven Niksic-Dubrovnik last Spring. It is a good mountain road with little traffic. If you are used to mountain roads, you will enjoy it as it is scenic. The road surface is fine most of the time. It is much easier than Podgorica-Kotor, which is absolutely superb but needs to be well used to narrow and steep mountain roads. Pogorica-Petrovac-Budva is longer but easier.

I have several pages on these routes. You will find the kind of landscape to expect.
