We are travelling to Riga in mid May. Can anyone recommend a cozy, reasonably priced hotel, bed and breakfast, or hostel for our stay?

I recently stayed at Argonauts Hostel which is very centrally located in the old town (and about 500 metres from the bus station and tram stops). It accommodates quite a young crowd (NO stag dos though!!) so on Fridays and Saturday nights it can be a bit noisy if you're staying on the same floor as the Reception/lounge area but if you're on the 2nd floor it's very quiet. The rooms are bright and clean as are the bathrooms. They also arrange little walking tours or outings (bobsledding or shooting in an old Soviet bunker for example!) if you're interested.

I paid around 8 lats a night for a 4 bed dorm.

I would recomend the Albert hotel, situated kind of central in the city and not that expensive at all.
I've been there in July, and it was kind of high season, to be honest it wasn't expensive, so i assume that in may it should be even better.

Check out my tips for Riga sights.

Have a nice day

I stayed at the Konventa Seta when I visited Riga in 2006. Not sure if this is the kind of budget you're looking at (it's not a hostel), but I thought it was very good value for money and a very pleasant place to stay. Good breakfast, had a bar that was comfy enough to relax in, nice rooms. Very central too. It's a collection of historic buildings in the Old Town.

We got our room through this site: http://www.riga-hotels.1bigeurope.com/

They seemed to have the best prices when I was looking and there's a good choice of hotels on there too, so have a look to see if there are any bargains!

I'd definitely read the tips on here and Tripadvisor when you've narrowed it down to a few hotels - some places have a very poor reputation. I thought I'd found a fantastic bargain, only to read that previous guests had found the hotel was joined to a strip club and activities from the club carried on (noisily) in the hotel!

The Albert Hotel has site www.alberthotel.lv , note the lv at the end. At that site you press booking, and it'll give you prices.

Hope this helps, a great town, by the way. Visit the old towb by foot, with a guide book, don't miss the museum there, on what happened in Latvia during the occupations by the Germans, and Russians.
