| Warnemünde | Visiting Warnemunde in May for a day Posted: Fri March 21, 2008 07:16 AM UTC
We are going on shore excursion for a day to Warnemunde and booking on a cruise ship could be very pricey. I would like your advice whether we can just go on our own for about 4 to 5 hour trip. How much would that cost and what are the attractions in Warnemunde?

This is just about it I'm afraid.
Being a centre of maritime traffic, the district of Warnemünde comprises numerous navigational aids, the oldest of which is the lighthouse located near the beach promenade. The lighthouse, which is currently still in use, was built in 1897. In the summer, the 40m (135ft) high tower allows visitors to enjoy an impressive view over the Baltic Sea and the Northern districts of Rostock. The nearby Teepott (Tea Pot) with its slightly curved roof, the resort’s second famous landmark, is an interesting example of GDR-architecture. Built in the 1960’s and renovated in 2002, it today houses different restaurants and a sea voyage exhibition. So the cruise ships tour might be the best option in this case. Good luck and enjoy your holiday. In the vicinity of the canal Alter Strom (Old River), with its various restaurants, pubs and traditional fishing boats, regional specialties are offered on a fish market. Warnemünde’s broad, sandy beaches are the largest on the German Baltic Sea coast and stretch out over a length of 3 kilometres (2 miles).

I have heard people say that the usual excursion offered on cruise ships from Warnemunde is to berlinn and that it involves a very long round trip by coach.
Have you had a look at the several Warnemunde Travel Guides on VT? Worth having a look at to add a few more ideas to the good ideas given in your first reply. I like the idea of a short train trip to Rostock. http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/33c38/257b/

Thank you for the tip Ranger49. How long a train ride is it to Rostock and the cost? If we have 5 to 6 hours, can we go to Berlin and at what cost if we are to go on our own?

If you cut and paste the link I gave in my first reply into your browse, you will see all the details for getting to Rostock in "Off the Beaten Path Tips" as well as many more ideas.
Rostock is 10 miles away, the train journey is short and only 3 euros.

Hi ya,
Been to Warnemünde last October myself - only spent a night - What we really enjoyed was walking around the part called "Alter Strom" - there are really cute, tiny fishermen's houses. You'll definitely find a place to eat there. If you want to try a typical after dinner schnaps, do order a Doppelkuemmel from Lehment (locals call it "Mann un fru" - which bascially means man and woman) - it's got a caraway flavour and has been destilled in Rostock since ages.
