Messina Travel Forum

We are going to Messina for the day on the Legend of the Seas on April 18th. I think we will go to Taormina for the day and as the bus seems to take a long time I think we will get the train. Is the station far from where the ship comes in ? would it be walkable or better to get a taxi? I think the train takes about 30 minutes. Once we get to Taormina, I have read that we can get the Fennicular up the hill. Is this a long way from the train station? The alternative is to use the bus. Since we are only in the port from 8 am till 6 pm I feel we will need to get off the ship pretty soon after it docks and also plan to be back by 5 pm.

The Taormina train station is halfway between Taormina and Giardini Naxos and the best way from there up to Taormina itself is by bus.

You might find it easier to do the whole thing by bus - I have done the reverse trip that way (from Taormina to Messina and back by bus).

The train takes 45 minutes or more, but there's one at 9:30 from Messina Centrale to Taormina-Giardini. Look at http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/ and select English from the link in the top right hand corner. You can put the staion names in, and the day and time of your travel, and it will give you the trains.

Can't help on the rest though, as we've only been to Palermo !

I'm just back from a few days break in Taormina...I can't be much help to you re the train etc as we hired a car - but what I can tell you is that at the moment the cable car you mention is not running - there is a shuttle bus service in its place, but we didn't take it as the day was so fine we decided to walk. Taormina is really beautiful - not sure how much you'll get done in a day but it's a great place to stroll and watch the world go by - and eat of course!
