Well Bee,
First thing is that I don't think that Milan has enough attractions in it to merit a 5 day stay, 2 or 3 at the most, and remember if you want to view The Last Supper to book way in advance, in fact do it now. Re travel in Italy, I would have to say that I regard train as best having tried driving on several occasions. Let the train take the strain! The national train timetable and prices can be found at http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html The site is user friendly and you'll quickly get the hang of it. In my opinion there is no need to book in advance, just buy at the station. From Milan you can catch a train to either Como which is a large town at the foot of the lake, or Varenna (my own little piece of heaven) in the centre of the lake. Both trains take about an hour and will cost approx €6. There is a train service to Zermatt from Milan Central with one change taking approx 4 hours but I'm afraid I don't know the cost. Beautiful Verona is about 1hr 30mins from Milan by train, there are 3 station in Verona, the one you want is Porta Nuova. This train station is also where you could get a bus for a short trip to Lake Garda if you wished (well worth it!). From Verona, Venice is only 1hr45mins, Vincenza 30mins and Padova 1hr. Plenty of advice to be found here, put a destination in the search box and you'll be amazed at the information available to you, all written by fellow travellers. Regards, Billy

hi Billy,
U are right. I ve been very active reading about all those places i mentioned and yes i think we will stay in Milan for 3 days only. we will do a day trip to BERGAMO. Also from Verona we will do a day trips to Vicenza & Garda( not venice already seen it). It seems we cannot avoid Milan and we have to always go through it if we want to go to Como. WE might also go to Portofino for 2 days. Thanks alot for your help. really appreciate it. Take care Bee :)

Me again Bee,
Bergamo is a fantastic place gor a day trip, right outside the train station you can catch a bus up to the old part of the town (citta alta) and dont miss the cafe/bar at the top of the finiculare with the most spectacular views ofer citta bassa. Also, instead of Como which is OK, take the train to Varenna and enjoy not only the village but take a 20 min ferry trip across to Belaggio which is a fading jewel testement to an the age of when people took the Grand Tour. My Varenna page can be found at http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/97f16/2268b/ Please also remember that if you find anyones tips are helpful to click on the thumbs up icon at the bottom of it. If I can be of anymore help just drop a reply into this post. Billy
