Hi,

can you give a bit more information of why you are here and what you want to do in your free time? Car hire/purchase can be expensive with add on expenses (fuel - $1.50 per litre, etc) Public transport is fairly good to get around and see things and then hire a car for a day or two to go further afield - this will work out a lot cheaper (and using the savings for cheap flights to discover further afield.

sorry, forgot to answer about accomodation! The rental market is getting expensive here and, with our dollar appreciating against the USD, your $$ may not go too far. If you are coming as a student, you can try student accom through the university. If coming for other, maybe try house sitting - there are a couple of sites (I'll try to find them for you) where you look after someones house while they are away for a few months. Worse case look at real estate websites for units just out of Brisbane city centre. Warning - the market is very very tight here at the moment. Perhaps go onto an online 'relationship' site and get an aussie girlfriend who has a house of her own!!!!!
