| State of Victoria | Going to melbourne in May Posted: Thu March 20, 2008 10:51 AM UTC
Hi there
I am going to Melbourne in May. I want to ask how is the weather there in May and i already booked a hotel at Easystay at Bayside motel at fitzroy street in St.Kilda, what do you think of this motel? I booked for a single room ensuite. I want to look for a much better hostel with ensuite but cant get anything cheaper and near the city, Is St.Kilda far from the city and is it a safe place for a single woman to travel to? my other hotel option is miami hotel but its a bit expensive and not sure if this is nice, can you suggest where is the good and safe place to stay?thanks a lot |

Have never stayed at this motel, but, St. Kilda is a short tram trip to the city and has a busy, cafe, restaurant, pub, live music feel. A great area for a single woman to explore.

It takes about half an hour from St. Kilda to the CBD if you take the tramway.
You have a nice beach, nice cafés and restaurants. So no real need to be closer to the city centre. Depending on how long you stay, get a day or multi-day or week ticket for public transportation, and you get anywhere, and it is not dearer from St. Kilda than from the CBD. The big advantage of staying in the CBD is that many attractions are at walking distance. What is your budget? I know some affordable options in the city - but would not call them really beautiful...

Hi,
I'm from Melbourne and you can never trust the weather!!! It can drop 20C in a couple of hours! We had 5 days of 35C+ last week and that is very unusual for mid March. By May though it will be cold, probably less than 20C most days but days can be really fine and sunny. St Kilda is a nice place to be based, good transport, cafes etc. has a bit of a bad rep in some areas but if you are careful and don't do anything silly you will be fine. Cheers Cheryl

Weather in Melb as other posters have said can be almost anything (hope there's some rain as we really need it).
I live in Melb so have not stayed at Easystay, but its on Fitzroy Street and can get very noisy as night. Lots of bars and restaurants in the area and very easy access to the city by tram on Fitzroy Street. If you are sensible you should be OK staying in StKilda, but some of the local "boys" can get very roudy. Usually OK and just ignore them. Miami hotel is in West Melbourne and there is nothing around there

just be sure to catch the last tram back if you are out late in the city
my boy went to see a movie at st kilda, it was a long movie and he missed the last tram - couldn't afford a cab and had to walk all the way back to parkville

OK so how long are you going to be here? That Easystay looks like about $80/night. There's a 7/11 just up the street where you can get most of what you want for brekkie, or there's a supermarket in Ackland Street (maybe a bit too far to walk). There are pub meals for around $10 - 15 depending on where you go, so depending on how long you are here, sounds like the $US1000 should be OK. . . . and craic, city to Parkville is not THAT far - LOL

OK you win - sorry. Bit late now, but there's always the nightrider that could have got him to the city from St Kilda and maybe the same $5 with a change of bus onto Parkville - depending on which night of the week off course as nightriders only run a couple of nights a week.

If you're looking for something at a later point in the city, for quite a similar price you could try the Kingsgate Hotel in King Street, which is not too far away at all from the Casino/restaurant precinct.
http://www.kingsgatehotel.com.au/ It's won some awards for being an affordable budget hotel. It's right next door to a French restaurant too - not so cheap dining, but certainly handy. Good luck. Kate
