| Vienna | Vienna to Munich Posted: Wed March 19, 2008 03:59 PM UTC
Hi,
Does it make any difference buying a train ticket from Vienna to Munich in Vienna itself as compared to buying a separate ticket at the border to Germany? Btw, what is the station name at the border? Thanks for any advice. |

yes, because:
- there is a 29 Euro special you can buy from the Internet. - there is a Bayern Ticket (a group ticket) you can buy in Salzburg and it's worth to use it if you are a small gang - the Austrian international through tariff is somewhat (slightly) more expensive than the national tariff Now: if you plan to travel extensively and to Austria and to Germany, there are two things you should not miss: a) CITY-STAR tickets in Slovakia and Hungary - the cheapest way to travel to Germany and Slovakia b) RAIL+ 25% discount card (costs 25 Euro in Hungary for a year) - that will make all international tickets automagically 25% less There could be more things. I cannot really answer your question properly if I don't know how many of you traveling and what is your ENTIRE itinerary in Europe. There is usually a lot of room to optimize; a "GO WEST" tariff ticket bought in Hungary is often cheaper than in Vienna because there is no "GO WEST" tariff sold in Vienna. There are offers (CITY-STAR) not available or much worse in Austria and so on.

I would have thought that if you have the time buying a ticket from Freilassing (first station after Salzburg and in Germany) would get you a better tariff, or possibly even buying Wien-Salzburg and Salzburg-Munich separately might be cheaper as you have less km in Austria before the border on the ticket (kms are charged slightly higher when going to an international destination than domestically). Otherwise the Citystar tariff might give you a saving for Vienna to Munich. Bear in mind that non-ICE services will be cheaper than ICE services, but if money is no object I'd recommend the ICE service.

Hi again,
There r 4 of us, all adults, travelling from Vienna to Fussen actually, but almost all the connections go via Munich. I tried to use OEB website but when it comes to fare calculation, the language changed to German. Then I tried the db.com which has this 39 euro promotion, subject to seat availabilty. If I try to buy the tickets separately ie Wien-Salzburg and Salzburg-Munich, the total price was double. As for the Go West ticket, there is no English language on the Hungarian website, so I do not know how much cheaper is it.
