Neuschwanstein castle tour Posted: Wed March 19, 2008 04:47 PM UTC
I have booked the castle tour in english tour at 4:45 PM. I'm in a little tight schedule for returning to Munich. As per DB website there is a train leaving from Fuessen at 6.05 PM and its connecting bus from Hohenschwangau is at 5:40 PM. So looks like if the tour starts at the correct time I have a good chance to catch the bus to the Fussen train station. My question is how closely the tour schedule is maintained by the castle tour guides ? And if not are there taxis available to reach the train station. Thanks a lot in advance.

Your're too tightly scheduled for my liking. In low season, before late April, if everything at the castle runs PERFECTLY on schedule, you might barely make it, if you are using the bus back down. The castle was probably 3/4 mile,to a mile, from the transport area when I last visited. You will not make it on foot. If you are visiting in the May-September time frame, I don't see you even getting close to making it. I would move my tour up at least an hour, probably two. That way, you will not be as rushed, and will have time to enjoy the tour, and the area a bit more. Gary

Thanks a lot Gary... for your reply. I'll be reaching Hohenschwangau at least an hours and half before the tour in this coming mid. April. I expect I'll have enough time walk up to the castle, taking time to soak up the surrounding before the tour starts. I may have to rush only after the tour ends. I appreciate your suggestion for taking the mini bus on the way down. -Utpal

Before I forget, you can't take pictures of the interior of the castle. You can, however, take pictures out of the windows. When you are in the Throne Room, try to get a picture, or two out of those windows. You have Hohenschwangau, the lake, and the mountains, all in view. Also, when you are on the backside of the castle, you can take pictures across the gorge, and over to the Marien Bridge. You'll cross that bridge to get to the busses back down, so when you are on the bridge you'll also be able to take a few photos of the castle from there. I always went during the winter, and the busses didn't run, so make sure you can do the busses on a one way basis. Gary

Thanks again Gary. I'll remember to ask about the bus at the ticket office at Hohenschwangau to make sure it's running. -Utpal

if you don't want to worry about the transportation there is a guided tour that departs right in front of the main train station in munich. the tour makes a stop at Linderhof Palace and at Oberammergau. It is a guided tour where you won't have to worry about transportation. you can purchase a ticket at the tourist center located in the front of the main building at the train station in munich. Bus departs across the street. I would recommend buying the ticket the day before to make sure they have availability.

Ahh, what memories! I was at Neuschwanstein last year at the beginning of May. It gets behind schedule a bit, but not alot. However, that's right about the hike up the hill. We weren't rushed at all, so we had a leisurely afternoon taking pictures and admiring the views. If you're on a schedule, try to trade for an earlier tour, just for that bit of a breathing room! Oh and for a nice beer on the patio below the castle! Enjoy it, it's a fun tour!
