We were there a couple of weeks ago - as Leics says, it's not a problem for visitors. We did do some straying off the beaten path (miles off in some cases) and even then, it's not a problem as the garbage is neatly stacked in a designated place. Anywhere the average tourist is likely to go is perfectly un-garbagey.

I'd try, prices of hotels should be a real deal and the centre of the city won't probably be THAT bad.

According to those who have recently visited, it isn't.

Neither is the surrounding area (Sorrento/Amalfi/Pompeii etc).

The main problem seems to be in the Napolitan suburds but, as noted above, each street seems to have a deignated area for rubbish (which s largely plastic-bagged anyway).

One does not have to wade through heaps of rubbish, despite media reports which may suggest otherwise.

I was in Naples last June and the rubbish was by no means kept in orderly bags and piles etc. It was free flowing, ankle-deep in some places and altogether disgusting. Perhaps it has been tidied up somewhat since then. I know that it's very tempting to joke about it, but really it does spoil the visit. The one blessing was that our hotel (Albergo del Golfo) was extremely good value at 60Euro for a single room. The hotel was in the final stages of refurbishment and was one of the very best hotels we stayed at in the six weeks we were in Europe. The rooms were very large with wall to wall marble, air-con and beautiful big clean bathrooms. It was lovely to come in off the filthy street to what seemed somewhat akin to paradise indoors.

The fact that you were there last June and I was there this February does indeed mean that matters have been taken in hand, at least partially. There was government intervention in January, in the centre of Naples at least.

As I said, and was noted on the prevous thread, it is not generally a problem for visitors.

It is not a simple matter to deal with. Difficulties have persisted in the area for years, and are unlikely to go away quickly. The intervention by national government has only partially solved the problem, being (as I understand it) mainly in the areas most likely to be visited by tourists (for obvious reasons).

So, as I said, it's not a problem for visitors.

It's good to know that it is no longer a problem for visitors but I can assure you that when I was there it was a big problem. It showed the city in a very poor light which is so sad because Naples has so very much to offer. It was only a matter of time before something would have to be done about it and I am very happy to hear that it now has been done and that it is no longer a problem for visitors.
