I will be arriving to Lisbon on the 25th of April, which I hear is a National Holiday. Will museums/other sites, etc. be open that day? are there any special events I should know about?

An important day for Portugal and for Lisboa especially where a more visible celebration usually do take place. Yes, to second Alexandra's response, the museums will be open that day, as well as practically everything else in the big city. I'd suggests you pay a visit to the main tourist office in Lisboa for a listing of events and celebratory activities designed for the event. The main office is at Palacio da Foz on Avenida da Liberdade across the Praca dos Restauradores. While there, pick up the free city guide and events magazine for all the latest happenings in the city. Have fun in beautiful Lisboa and happy trails.
