| Machu Picchu | Buying Tickets from PeruRail Posted: Tue March 18, 2008 04:29 AM UTC
Hi:
I am trying to buy tix for April in the perurail website from Cuszo to MP, and it's proving to be challenging. I tried about a half-dozen times. When I clicked on purchase, it claimed that my session expired. Has anyone else had difficulty recently. Also, is it easy to buy tickets in-country? Thanks! |

I did the Inca trail trek to Machu Picchu, so I never had to buy the ticket to MP from Cusco, and our OW ticket from MP/Aguas Calientes back to Cusco was pre-purchased for us by our trekking agency. I heard that the reservation system for Peru Rail is primitive. It is quite surprising given that they are owned by the transnational company "Orient Express." I believe that you will continue to have a hard time with it on-line. I actually also had a difficult time with it in pre-booking my train ticket to Puno from Cusco, so I e-mailed my hostel in Cusco and instructed them to pre-book and purchase my OW train ticket 4 months in advance, which they did for an extra charge of $6. I suggest that you do this too or if you want to take chances, buy your train ticket when you get to Peru. You can see my Puno transportation tip for the train service via Peru Rail/Orient Express and my experience with it, if you wish. Goodluck & enjoy beautiful Peru!

I called them from home and made the reservations. Then again called them when we arrived in Lima to confirm and when we arrived in Cusco we went to their office to pay and received the tickets.

I had the same problem last fall with their website. Just call them on the phone.
BTW English on the phone isn't that good, if you know someone who speaks Spanish it will be a lot easier. You will need to give them a lot of information, that can't be done by phone (credit card, passport etc.). Have them give you an e-mail address to send it to. Much to my surprise, my train tickets were at my hotel, when I arrived.
