Shanghai Pudong Airport
Posted: Sun March 16, 2008 10:07 PM UTC
Hi. I'm coming in to Shanghai from Pudong Airport quite late. Around 12midnite. Is it possible to stay the night at Pudong Airport so I don't waste money on hotels for just a couple of hours stay? Was thinking of waiting 5 hours in the airport before going into the city. What are the facilities available at Pudong Airport? Thanks.

There's a bunch of resturants and shops but I am not sure how late they stay open since I was not there late.

Other than that, I'm not sure what you mean by "facilities". It's much like every airport I have been in. There's lots of seating and I don't think anyone will say something to you for just hanging around.

Hope this helps.

Hi, I'm going to Shanghai via Pudong Airport past midnight as well. I'm going there March 24 and still contemplating if I will negotiate with hotel to have the room price slashed by half or stay at the airport. If you're going later than me, I'll make sure to give you an insight on how to go about it. Good luck to us!

I have never seen a hotel slash prices for anything. Furthermore, most hotels do not allow check-in until late in the afternoon. It is not a matter of waiting until 8 AM and then going to a hotel. Unless you have a prior approval, you will not be able to check in until after noon, and after 3 in many hotels.

Much thanks for the tip gaolei. I'm sure that's true in most hotels specially those having 3 stars and up. I've actually negotiated for a 50RMB, 4 hour stay in a 3 star hotel from another city in China in late 2005 and another for 80RMB for a night's stay when I got to the hotel at almost midnight(they probably think renting it out for cheap is better than not to rent it out at all). That's why I was hoping I could do the same (but not expecting so) in Shanghai. Now this is an adventure ;)

I doubt you'll be allowed to stay in the airport.

As far as them letting you stay at the airport; my guess is that they won't be able to tell if you should be going, coming or what. But that's something you will have to determine once you are there.

Most of the hotels I like in Shanghai Don't know what 80 RMB is. I just think that after an extended stay on an airplane crossing half the world's time zones, I don't care what the hotel costs. I also don't think walking around with a bag looking for a deal at midnight is fun. Besides, Most nights in Shanghai I am just getting back to the room at midnight, but no hotel ever offered to reduce my bill for getting in Late.

Thanks Traveller711. Did you wait til morning at the airport yourself? How was your trip? Were there restaurants open 24 hours in the airport? Thanks.

Hi pollybaby, please check your vtourist email. i have written down the experience i had in shanghai in detail. for other vtourist forumers, no i didn't stay at the airport but i saw a couple of passengers, who took the same flight i did, stay at the airport. the terminal 1 of shanghai pudong airport didn't have any restaurants or shops open at midnight unless you call the money exchange booth a shop. you would have more success finding one in ramada hotel beside the airport. recently (march 26, 2008), the terminal 2 of shanghai pudong airport was opened. i saw a coffee shop still open past 12 midnight but that was in the departure's waiting area. hope this helps
