| Sydney | Sydney Opera House Posted: Sun March 16, 2008 04:39 PM UTC
A young friend of mine, a student, is coming to Sydney to study for 6 weeks. She would really like to attend a performance at the Sydney Opera House. And it is a top experience, I know.
But the prices! Does anyone know of a cheaper way for a young overseas person to go to something there? Last minute tickets, student rush, something like that? I saw that just last week there was a live broadcast of an opera and people were all sitting outside on the steps watching it for free. That would be great. Is there a web site where one can find out if that sort of stuff is happening? You get my gist? She would love the experience but just can't afford the prices. |

I just looked at the website - these are ROH, Covent Garden Prices! - though I am sure we have much cheaper seats and concessions as well!
If your friend comes to the UK be sure to tell him/her about Welsh National Opera in Cardiff - we heard Bryn Terfel sing Falstaff in the Welsh Millenium Centre there last week - best seats £37.50. Only a couple of Australian dollars more than a student concession seat in cheapseats at Sydney!

If she does ever make it to the UK I hope she gets to WALES to see OUR Opera House in Cardiff Bay! Not only home of Welsh National Opera but leading Venue for the International Cardiff Singer of the Wotld Competition.

Prices for shows at the Opera House depend on what they are showing.
There are heaps of different shows they put on like operas, plays, music concerts, comedy shows, etc. So it just depends on what's on when your friend visits. Sometimes there are shows at the front of the Opera House. These are usually special events, but again it can be either very expensive or inexpensive. If your friend wanted to see the Opera House, it is free to walk around most of the outside. Otherwise there are tours that your friend can go on. They post everything that's on at the official website www.sydneyoperahouse.com
