Has anyone visited this town recently and if so what did you think? What are the plus points and what hotels would you recommend?

I was in Bergamo June 2007. I was only there for one night, it as a stop for a flight heading to Paris. I stayed at the Internation Youth Hostel. There is only one in Bergamo and it is great. Very, Very clean and nestled in the mountain. I went up to Citta Alta and it was beautiful, unfortunaly the weather wasn't! It was grey with heavy rains but you could still see the beauty. Sorry I don't have any names of hotels, but Bergamo is a bella city to be visited.

Hi!
I live in Bergamo, I will try to explain my point of view about my city. It's not a big place, it's quite calm and it hasn't much for night life: there are some discoes around but you need a car to reach them. In the city you can find pubs, bars and restaurants for spending the night. Being a tourist you can enjoy very much just walking in the old upper town which is really beautiful. The upper part (called CITTA ALTA) is a must, you should visit the main square (PIAZZA VECCHIA), the churches in that area and, if you can, go up the stairs of CAMPANONE (the bell tower in the PIAZZA VECCHIA) to have a nice view over the old town. There are a couple of museums in the upper town about science and archeology. Restaurants are also a great attraction in the old town. In the lower part of the town, in its centre, you'll find shops and restaurants. if you like paintings you can visit ACCADEMIA CARRARA a very famous pictures gallery in Bergamo. Don't miss a breakfast with cappuccino and brioches (croissant), there are lots of places where youc an find a great breakfast, just use your nose to choose yours! You can smell good coffee perfume in the right places! You'll find plenty of tips about all of this, if you need any specific just feel free to ask. Regards, Sergio

Hi Andrew,
I visited Bergamo for two nights a month ago. I can't tell you what to visit because we weren't there during the day and I've only seen the place in the hours of darkness! With hotels, the first thing you need to decide is which part of the city you want to stay in. We stayed in the Lower City as we wanted to be near the train station. I had thought it would be easy to get to get to the Upper City to eat in the evening, but I'd underestimated the distance and after a day of walking around Turin and to and from the station, walking to the funicular almost killed me! If you're visiting Bergamo alone I'd say stay in the Upper City (where you'll want to be most of the time) or plan not to return to your hotel during the day. We stayed at this place - http://www.angolodelpoeta.com/ - really good service and room. We booked with hostelbookers.com which seems to have the best prices and choice of rooms. There were a number in the Upper City which had good reviews on that site. Unfortunately, if you want to stay in a hostel, there only seems to be one. Most places are guesthouses. I found Bergamo to be pricey for rooms. From what we saw of Bergamo's nightlife, the Lower City was very quiet - this was on a Friday and Saturday night. We found a nice place to eat, however, and there are some bars and pubs open. They're just not heaving with people. We went to the Upper City on the second night and that was a lot more lively. There seemed to be an even mix of locals out to eat and drink and tourists. The restaurants in this part of Bergamo were all very tempting, although a couple were booked up so if you have anywhere in mind, give them a call first. Local food in Bergamo is very good. From what we did see, the Upper City was as lovely as they say and we're planning to go back now and see it during the day.
