Hi. Your Home Page doesn't say where you live so I'm not sure what to compare the roads to. If you've ever driven in the US, compare the roads to the typical state highway. They are two lane, marked in the middle. If you get off the main roads, you may run into 1-1/2 lane roads or even one lanes roads with pull-offs. Everyone is very polite about the pull offs and we had no trouble. If you are looking at Inverness and Spean Bridge, you will have excellent two-lane roads. There are not a lot of double highways, dual carriagways, Interstate-type roads in Scotland and they are near Edinburgh and Glasgow. Traffic is very light in the countryside so you really don't need four lanes.
If you've driven in France, they would be comparable to most N and D roads. They are well paved, well taken care of and little traffic.
