| Sardegna | Nuoro/Arbatax area Posted: Fri March 14, 2008 04:13 PM UTC
Hello all,
we will be travelling in Sardinia in May and wondering if somebody knows the Nuoro/Arbatax area. I have found nice B&B which is called Fico D'India (thanks Zeus Zeus) and we were wondering if its worth to drive there from Alghero through inland. We want to see the 'real Sardinia' along the way and hoping to find amazing beaches around Nuoro? Please help if you have any info. many thanks, kat |

Hi Kat
Your route depends on how much you like driving and what time you are leaving Alghero. If you have time and are a confident driver, leave Alghero for Bosa. If you have time stop here by the river and take a little walk around, grab a coffee and enjoy the atmosphere around the river and its bridges. Then head East towards Nuoro, (The scenery is not too special on this part). If time is limited take the ss389 to Villagrande Strisali and then turn left and drop down to Tortoli/Arbatax. This route gives some fairly good mountain views and you'll get some good views of the coastline on the last descents if your still in daylight. This route should take you about 3hrs from Bosa. If you want the full Sardinian experience head towards Eastward from Nuoro to Oresei and turn righ onto the ss125 to head for Tortoli. You will see some fantastic scenery but the road is much slower and you will need to stop for photo's and general sightseeing. Allow 5-6+ hours from Bosa for this route. As regards Fico d'india, it's a great B&B but do make sure you book ahead as they are not open until the summer months. If they are not open in May there are other B&B's that do open all year round. Try http://www.il-leccio-bb.it/ or http://www.sardegnaturismo.it Good luck, take care and above all enjoy your trip.

Hi
What's best is always a matter of personal taste and of course depends on how much time you've got and how lucky you are with the weather. Personally I love the ss125 road from Dorgali to Lotzorai. The scenery is amazing!. Look for the Su Gorropu Gorge. it is on your righthand side, to the south of Dorgali. It's the deepest gorge in Europe. You should stop at Baunei and follow the signs to "il Golgo". The view from the top is brathtaking if the weather & light is right. There are excellent views of wildlife to be seen at "is Piscinas" (Waterholes) and around the old church of San Pietro. If you have time, you can walk to Cala Goloritze (allow 4-5 hrs there & back)for some spectacular views of this fabulous beach and coastline. A trip to the Lanaittu Valley and the amazing water temple of "Sos Carros" could be of interest. (check if it is open and get a good map or hire a guide). The Domus de Janus site near Lotzorai is easily accessed, free and quite interesting. The headland at Porto Frailis is quite nice and you get good views from the top of the Spanish tower there. At Santa Maria Navarrase, The 1000 yr old Olive trees are worthy of a stroll and the cliff top walk from the (slosed until May) bar of "Sa Cadrea" towards "Pedra longa" is nice. Inland the area around "Perda Liana" is very nice and has good walks. That's enough to either whet your appetite or put you off completely!
