| Marrakesh | Temperature Posted: Fri March 14, 2008 04:02 PM UTC
Now that I was helped out (to my complete satisfaction) about hotels and itinerary, am starting another question regarding temperatures during this time of year... am traveling on the 21st to Marrakech.... what should I carry... am not planning a trek so far...
Is there any gear list for Marrakech online? |

I went there just a year ago, and the temperature was ok, not hot but not for short sleeves either (at least for me); and if you go to the desert, a cap and sun glasses

I was in Marrakech a couple of weekes ago and it was pretty hot during the day, hot enough for shorts and t-shirt, although as it's a strict muslim country so long trousers or skirt is advisable. At night it starts to get a little chilly so you may need a jumper or light jacket.

In Marrakech, daytime temperatures in late March would be on the warm (not yet hot) side, and it still get cool in the evenings. If you're thinking of going upwards to the mountains especially to the High Atlas, it gets really cold up there even during the daytime. So, pack for multiple exposures. You should include light casual clothing definitely, good for daytime as well as beach wear in case you decide to visit the coastal towns such as Essaouira. Tho generally condoned, wearing shorts especially for women around Marrakech and big urban areas is rather frowned upon by the locals who much adhere to discretion in social behaviours so dictated by their culture. At the seaside is a different story. Good trip.

It is possible that where ever you stay you will not be far from a mosque in which case you are likely to be in ear shot of the the muezzin calling the faithful to prayer. Sometimes it sounds delightful but at 4am might cause you to wake from a deep sleep. Be prepared, Take earplugs.

Yes, windcity, it's what it happened to me, the muezin, but it wasn't the end of the world (as long as you don't stay for a year and the muezin doesn't wake you up every single nigh; I only stayed two days).

Well that sound of the call for prayer even at 4.00 o'clock in the morning is very symbolic in understanding Islam.I guess that you all understand the meaning of the "early bird catches what ???????????????????????????"
It's up to you to grasp this !! Best, Rachid

Fortunately I live in Essaouira and am surrounded by mosques on 4 sides, the muezzin does not trouble me at all, however I was told a story of a couple who booked into a hotel and were woken at 4am, they had no idea what was going on and thought it was a fire alarm. The adjacent mosque had its loud speaker facing their window and was turned up to maximum.
The prayers are often recorded and set on a time switch, I have been out at 4am and to be honest I don't see to many people rushing to the Mosque.

It's a good thing to hear the call for prayer even at 4.00 am.In fact not a lot of people do wake up at that time for the first prayer which is a pity. However, many do their prayer at home.
Which part of Essaouira are you living?? I am living in Marrakech. Cheers, Rachid

As I said before, I heared the call at 4am, and it was something interesting indeed to know as much as possible about the culture and costums of the countries I visit; as soon as the call finished, I fell sound asleep again, it wasn't the end of he world.

Obviously, I meant customs, not costums (typing mistake, sorry).
