Have not been in Port of Spain at night but saw some of it on a short tour--interesting but not that much to do. We visited Mount St. Benedict, the historic grounds and church and saw the Pax Guest House where we had tea. It seems to be a safe, pleasant place to stay and has the near a bird sanctuary, trail hikes and seems affordable (no air-conditioning though when we were there). It is a little ways past Port of Spain itself. If you can get a bus or transportation, their website is: www.paxguesthouse.com

Good luck, Starship

I have been in Trinidad and Tobago several weeks and did not encounter any problems in Port of Spain. But this was more than ten years ago, so things could have changed. Trinidad BTW is very interesting, with the already mentioned bird sanctuary, and a natural tar lake. Amazing! Not to forget the legendary carnival - but as you need urgent info you obviously do not travel at this time of the year. But perhaps you hit a steel band festival... The major asset of Tobago are the beautiful beaches.

If I had only three days I would definitely not travel to Isla Margarita. You would just lose time travelling around instead of enjoying a place.

Pl. check my page for the hotels, I have provided some information. Island Margarita is in Venezuala and i think there is only one ferry which leaves from Peir 1 of POS (Port of SPain) on every wednesday, this was 2 years ago and the ferry doesnt go directly there, you have to take a bus or private arrangement from the ferry drop point which is around 150 kms to Margaritta. There are lot of agencies advertise for all inclusive trip to Margaritta by air. Check those too. All in all Trinidad is a good place and the safety depends on where you travel, if you stick to the crowded places and streetsm you will be all fine.
