| Buenos Aires | San Telmo Posted: Thu March 13, 2008 07:29 PM UTC
My husband and I are going to the festival in San Telmo on a Sunday. We only speak English. Would it be safe for us and would you recommend we go there?
Thanks |

I really liked San Telmo and think it's definitely worth visiting. I went there couple of times during the day (also market on Sunday) and at night (various milongas). I felt totally safe, using local buses at day time and taxis at night.
You really should not miss this unique neighbourhood of BsAs! Btw, what kind of festival are you going to?

The Sunday festival in San Telmo is safe. It is geared mostly toward tourists. So no problems if you do not speak Spanish. Many of the merchants and restaurant staff speak some English.

Agreed, you won't have any problem- there are throngs of people and the streets are closed and become large sidewalks. Just the usual precautions against pickpockets.
By the way, you could also try the Mataderos festival, we really enjoyed it. If you go out there early the bus on the way back can drop you off only a couple of blocks from San Telmo Square.

You will be perfectly safe...just be conscious of your bag and pockets.
I am a single woman who stayed last week in San Telmo....I wandered all over the neighbourhood and found the locals really friendly! PS I am English too, but live in Canada.......enjoy!

If you enjoy an open air "antiques" fair, actually more of a flea market with throngs of tourists then you might like it. I guess it is one of those things that every tourists does at least one time. I just find San Telmo much more enjoyable on other days when all the stores are open, the streets are not jammed with people and you can find a good seat in a restaurant for lunch.
Since your profile is not filled out not sure where you are from but I think you will find Buenos Aires one of the safest large cities anywhere. Suerte Sam

Hola
You will feel safe in San Telmo, during day many people on the street, at night..take a taxi because around San Telmo can be a little dark at night. You can go to San Telmo & La Boca the same day (sunday is the best day), La Boca is near and is the most picturesque place in the city... you will enjoy so much !!! Good Luck !! Eva

Like everyone says, just take the usual precautions against pickpockets, as you would in any city.
It wasn't in San Telmo, but in Parque San Martin - a guy and a girl tried the old distraction trick on me, throwing paint on the back of my jacket and having the girl come up to help me, saying she saw a big bird poop on me. She wanted to help clean off the poop, guy in the background in wait to pick my pocket.

Why are you renting a car in Buenos Aires? A car in the city will be more of a problem than a help. You would definitely want to find a garage and those are not as available in San Telmo as other areas in the city.
