If you land in KIX are you able to take a ferry to Kobe?

If you are just looking for a tour guide book, AAA is a good place to get one. Also, you can go to www.jnto.com and get all the info you need.

I agree with the suggestion of using the japan-guide site. Very helpful.
In addition I used both the LP Guide: http://shop.lonelyplanet.com/Primary/Product/Desti and the Eyewitness Guide: http://www.worldofmaps.com/showitem.cfm?ccd=eyewit Got both of them on the amazon.uk site - worth comparing prices. But the internet really was much more useful! The only book that I would absolutely recommend is the Exploring Kyoto book for self-guided walking tours around the city. Just marvelous: Also purchased from amazon.uk http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss_w_h_/202-39728 BTW - all of this info is available via google.
