Zanzibar Island Tides on the East Coast
Posted: Wed March 12, 2008 04:40 PM UTC
Hi all,

I'm going to the East Coast of Zanzibar in the first week of June. I understand it's very tidal, can anyone please tell me what time during the day the tide generally goes out? Thanks :)

The tides change with the moon. The moon does not orbit on 24 hour cycle, so the tides will change differently everyday. The mean lunar day is approximately 24.84 hours in length...

so high/low tide will be +1 hour from the previous day.

A lot of the East Coast is protected by a coral reef and there is no real tide issue. You will not be swept away. Its gentle. It does go out, way out, but there would be no safty issue - bar one. You need shoes to walk out there. Therre are very sharp vertical shells in the mud and they cut feet. I know.

What resort area are you going to?

I stayed in Jambiani. There are a lot of pictures of the tide and coral reef here:

Inside the reef. No safety issues except the sharp shells. You chances of surfing: zero. Wave action is minimal.

Take a look at my Jambiani Page, Paje's coastline looks the same. Beautiful.

You will havge a great time.

All the best,

DAO
