| Boston | Where to locals shop for clothes? Posted: Wed March 12, 2008 05:14 AM UTC
Hi again,
Are there any outlet malls in Boston (near the city, accessible by the T)? Or can you tell me where local Bostonians shop for clothes (affordable, lots of sales, etc)? We are not interested in high end or boutique stores. Family type stores like Old Navy, Ross, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Macy's, Burlington Coat Factory, J Jill, etc are what we're looking for. Also, where did Filene's move to? They closed the downtown crossing store for renovations, right? Thanks, kali |

The outlet malls are not near the city. Wrentham Mall is about an hour southwest of the city. There is a tour bus that makes runs from the Downtown hotels there for $38 a person, I believe. The other outlet malls are located on the Maine border in Kittery, a little over an hour drive. There is no transportation available there.
The local mall that best fits what you're looking for is the Cambridgeside Galleria. It has most of the stores you are looking for and you can get there on the Green Line Subway (Lechmere). There is a huge mall in Burlington, about a half hour outside the city, that is available by bus from Harvard Square. The Filene's Department Store is long gone, since it was taken over by Macy's. The Filene's Basement Store that was below it in Downtown Crossing is closed for two years while they do a huge construction project on that site. However, there are still TJMaxx, Marshall's, Macy's, etc. in Downtown Crossing. There is also another Filene's Basement near Copley Square, along with a Marshall's and all the boutiques of Newbury Street. Hope that satisfies your shopping needs! AlanSM

Marshalls is a good place to try. They're similar to Filene's Basement in that they carry a lot of designer things at a discount. If you like the idea of finding something by surprise, as opposed to already knowing what you're getting when you walk in, it's a fun place to shop. Their prices are great, too. I shop there all the time.

Hi, just got back from Boston. I stayed on Newbury street and found Filenes basement now on Newbury...its on the right hand side as you face towards the common about a block away...I went shopping all over! took a bus to wrentham Village on the Grayline bus. Its $38 and leaves from Charles street..you can check out the shops on their website ..but to be honest I found more bargains in the shops in Boston with all the sales on. Wrentham was good for shoes perhaps as i was looking for Ecco shoes but thats all I got. I caught the subway everywhere using my Charlie ticket that I purchased at the airport for $15 for 7 days..unlimited travel on the T..didnt need any taxis.Went to a huge mall in Lechmere at the end of a green T line. There are many big malls if thats what you are looking for and I believe I was on Washington street in town and fell into Marshalls, T J Max, macys. I wasnt looking for much clothing but I did find 70% off all clothing from Sigried Olsen shop on Newbury...lovely womens clothing. designer but really cheap!and great quality. Good luck
