Yellowstone National Park Camping in Yellowstone
Posted: Tue March 11, 2008 11:04 PM UTC
We are driving across country and would like to spend 2-3 days in Yellowstone, our route takes us through the park, entering from Idaho Falls and exiting on the eastside hwy 14. We are driving a camper van and would like to pitch a tent. Of the campsites in the park, does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks,

Laura

It's been very long since we've been in the park, but just in case you have not found the park link, here it is: http://www.nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/index.htm

It has just about all info you may want to find out.

All the best ... please do note the mention about bears - they are huge, and they are out at night!

You will be entering through the south gate and exiting through the east. Check this web page for information on the campgrounds:

http://www.nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/camping-in-yellowstone.htm

Fishing Bridge is one on your route, DO NO even consider that one. It is for RVs, and is expensive. As you check the chart the following would be on your route: Lewis Lake, Bridge Bay, and Grant. Lewis Lake is out of the way for sites, meaning even more driving. Grant is the best for viewing the west geyser side of the park, and Bridge Bay is the best for viewing the spectacular Canyon area. You can, of course view both areas from one location, but if you want to save some driving, you might want to reserve days in both campgrounds, and move camp to save some driving time. DO make reservations!!!!!! AND make them as early as possible.

Since you are going out the East Gate, if you haven't scheduled Cody, Wyoming into your trip, try to do so. The Buffalo Bill Historical is a nationally known museum that takes one or two days to visit, it is that large. This is an excellent must see, unless you just don't care for museums.
