| Province of Ontario | Niagara on the Lake: fly into Buffalo or Toronto? Posted: Tue March 11, 2008 06:48 PM UTC
I will be attending a conference at the Prince of Wales hotel in Niagara-on-the-Lake and need some advice for those of you familiar with the Buffalo area border crossings. I'll be leaving from NYC and am trying to decide whether I take the cheaper flight into Buffalo or if I should pay the extra and fly to Toronto (about $100 difference right now). Either way I will also need to rent a car, but I've Googled the distance to the hotel from each airport and it looks like Buffalo is approximately 1/2 hour closer. I have not done the border crossing from Buffalo-Ontario in probably close to 15 years. How long of a wait can I expect at the border? I will need to attend a meeting that starts at about 1p on a Friday in July (not July 4th). I'm planning to catch an early flight out, but need to make sure I either leave enough time for the border or just scrap that idea all together and go directly in/out of Toronto. Any thoughts?

Fly into Buffalo. It is a much easier airport to get out of then Pearson in Toronto. Parking is also more expensive there. The other thing is that your flight will be domestic so you only have to be at the airport an hour or so in advance whereas if you fly to Toronto it will be an international flight so you'll need to be there an hour sooner. The border crossing is usually less than half an hour unless you go through right at rush hour.

Double check to make sure that a car rented in Buffalo can be driven into Canada.

Yup! Fly into Buffalo. I live on the outskirts of NOTL and use the BUF airport all the time. It's a great, simple easy airport. Enjoy the Prince of Wales ... it's a STUNNING hotel!
