Do you recommend winter tyres or snow chains in late March at GP and surrounding areas (Mittenwald, Linderhof etc)?
Is either of them mandatory by law?

Mandatory by law: Your car had to be equipped in such a way as to make an accident as unlikely as possible.
So basically, yes, for late March in the Alps you should have winter tyres. They are also much better as soon as the temperatures drop below 7°C.
Weather forecast predicts low temperatures for next week and the possibility of snow in the mountains.Last year we had lots of snow in the middle of March, after some nice, warn days earlier.
You only need snow chains if you want to go up a road on snow, definitely not for Linderhof.

Thank you very much for the quick reply.
So you mean that not snow chains are required for Linderhof and Mittenwald?

I don't believe you need snow chains, unless you intend to drive on small side roads that are not going to be cleared from snow. Winter tires, on the other hand, are a good idea from October to Easter.
I suspect you are going to rent a car, so the car rental need to take care of that anyway.

winter tyres are definitely a good idea. I don't think that you'll need snow chains.
