| Lago di Garda | Train travel from venice to lago di garda, where to stay, what to do Posted: Mon March 10, 2008 05:36 PM UTC
Hi
My partner and I plan to fly in to Venice and stay there for about 3 nights of an 8 day holiday in italy. Do you think this is the best way to plit the holiday up? Wherd do you think we should spend most of our time? It is our first time to Italy and we love old towns, walks, scenery and nature and places to chill out. Can we get an open return ticket to garda? Is it very dear? Do the trains run everyday? We dont have lots of money but love quirky, rather than modern places to stay (no camping). Where would you suggest and why? Where should we stay around the lake given how we like to spend our time and my wish to go out on boat, maybe get up into the hills and/or nearest mountains. Hope that you can help thanks K |

You might enjoy the town of Varenna off Lago di Como ... there are quite a few pictures in the VT pages. We stayed in Milan so not sure about accomodations.

Nomad, K was asking about GARDA lake!
K: 1) there is no need to buy a return ticket, ast they cost the exact double of the one way... So, if you are uncertain about the return date, simply buy it (from most of the travel agencies without further charge) or at the station. 2) for prices, look at http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/ferrovie/util/inglese.jsp and try a purchase (you won't finish it...) 3) yes, trains run 365 days a year, and along the main line Venice Milan you will find that for most of the day there is a train every hour or so.; Anyway, there are only 2 stations on Garda lake: peschiera del Garda and Desenzano del Garda. Search VT to decide where you wanna go: Sirmione, Peschiera, Bardolino, Lazise, Garda (the village), Torri Del Benaco, Malcesine (**), Riva del GArda, Limone, Salò, Desenzano, etc... To go from lazise up to Riva, the best way is to stop in verona, and take the direct bus that leaves exactly in front of the train station. Post again here when you will have an idea of the places you would like to see best, and on the period you will go. Prices/availebility may change a lot. Ciao Francesco
