I have to make a difficult choice, which island to vist Espiritu Santo or Tanna this year May? No other island does fit my flight schedule.

Both seems to be quite appelaing. I've been once just on Efatu for few days.

Espiritu Santo seems to have better accomodation options and nicer beaches, but Tanna offers volcano exoitics.

Anyone who 've been at both places, can help to make a choice, please?

My favourite is Tanna. Loved the volcano tho found it a bit too mesmerising walking around the rim watching the flames - felt like I wanted to jump in! Loved the "moonscape" of the area too. Espirito Santo is OK especially when festival is on, but Tanna with it's John Fromme history, people and great scenery, and of course volcano does it for me. Have a great time

I have been to both islands, and it's a hard choice. Luganville (Espiritu Santo) is great for WWII history and wreck diving, if those are your interests. However, my interests tend toward Yasur Volcano on Tanna Island, which is just spectacular. Under "normal" conditions, you can watch the volcanic activity right from the rim -- spectacular lava rocks hurling themselves up and down, especially beautiful after sunset (hire local vehicles as transport). However, the authorities there will close the volcano off to close-up visits if it's too active. Nevertheless, you would still have a good time on Tanna. It's very exotic.

I went to Tanna in January this year. I guess it depends what your into but I wanted to say that the Yassur Volcano was probably worth the trip all on its own. Quite an unreal experience standing only a few hundred feet from a Volcanic vent with molten rock expoding out of it every few minutes. Amazing. Theres plenty of places to snorkel around the world (including Tanna)...not to many accessible active volcanoes though...good luck with your decision making. (Maybe you've already made it?)

It seems I 'll manage both Santo and Tanna, the last one as day trip by air- and hope to stay on Tanna around volcano a bit when it will became dark ;)
