| State of Victoria | 12 Apostles - How any are there? Posted: Sat March 8, 2008 04:55 PM UTC
I recently visited the 12 Apostles on the Great Ocean Road. I recall there were not 12 any longer, and have since read differing reports that at present, there are 7, 8 and 9 remaining. What is the correct number?

There are 8 remaining - the last one to collapse was in 2005. Since the 12 Apostles were formed by erosion of the original coastline, the others will eventually follow suit and collapse as well. However, it is also possible that more will be created, since the limestone on the cliff is still being eroded by the waves at a rate of around 2 centimetres a year.

There is doubt that there ever were 12 Apostles - the name given to 'them' in the 1950s to replace the name 'Sow & Piglets' (who comes up with such names?) prior. But 8 there are as Godiva highlighted.
