Heeey...
As far as I know, there are no budget fares to and from Sofia/Bucharest. I have done the train ride a few times, and always look at the routes to see if a carrier has added. If you find one, please let me know :) good luck in your travels

At around 22 Euro/direction and 8 Euro in Russian sleeper the economy of the flights is somewhat difficult. If in few years there won't be any border control (Schengen) the situation will be even more difficult for the flights.

If you are into flying, you are looking at around EUR 250 or so OTP SOF RT on TAROM or Hemus/Bulgaria Air, provided you can get on the days they fly. No low budget airline does the route, it is mainly a business route, hence the rate. Otherwise, the (day or night) train is an option. The infrequent bus is not recommended.

I checked www.harefares.com (a route indexing site) and found that Malev Airlines (www.malev.com) flies from Bucharest (OTP) to Sofia (SOF). Hope that helps.

Malev only flies OTP to SOF via BUD (Budapest Ferihegy that is).

I am afraid, that would be a VERY expensive flight :(
There are two trains daily, BTW. Other suggestion: why not spend time in Veliko T'rnovo instead of Sofia? It's closer to Bucuresti, you can reach it if you take a seat in the Bucuresti-Istanbul section of the daily train and never forget: Balkan countries are NOT ABOUT THE CAPITAL CITIES! Regarding Romania: I would rather think how to spend a longer time in Suceava than Bucuresti, for instance. I wasn't that often in Romania myself but as we were there we just went straight to Suceava. Somewhat untypical destination (see my name), but the outside-painted monasteries are really amazing.

There is a new bus line from Bucharest to Sofia (since 06.03.08). The journey takes about 7 hours and the fare is ~ 20 Euros. As far as I know the bus leaves Bucharest around 4 pm.
