| Warsaw | population of warsaw in 16th and 17th centuries Posted: Fri March 7, 2008 02:18 PM UTC
Has anybody got any reliable statistics for population of Warsaw as it developed in 16th and 17th century? I would be very grateful for any help (I have looked in Norman Davies, Encyklopedia Staropolska etc. but there is no help).

A book I have at home 'Warszawa, jej dzieje i kultura' by many authors quotes the number of permanent residents in Warsaw at around 7000 in 1564 and over 15000 around 1620. But, if all the suburbs are considered the number can be estimated at 15-20000 around 1655. In addition, there would be those who lived there temporarily or just visited for fairs, seym sessions and all kinds of church celebrations. If you have some more detailed questions, let me know. The book is in Polish of course.
