if you are from certain countries like US or Canada, you'll have to display $100 (more for canadians) and subsequently hand over that amount as a reciprocity fee which is good for the life of your passport. but i have never heard of what you are asking about.

Would help if you tell us the passport you will be traveling on.
For USA/Canada/UK/Australia/Western Europe countries, Chile Immigrations do not hassle you at all and the passport scan and stamping is just a formality. There is a reciprocity fee that must be paid before standing in the Immigrations line for persons traveling on a USA-$131 (went up on January 1st), Canada-$132, Australian-$56 or Mexican passport. In the case of USA and Canadian passports, this payment is good for the life of the passport whereas for the Australians, it is good for only 90 days. If you are from a country that requires a visa to enter Chile, then none of the above is applicable.

Forgot to add, the reciprocity fee if applicable must be paid in cash USD in good condition without prohibited serial numbers (to guard against the good fakes out there) or by credit card. There are booths specifically labelled for this payment before the Immigration booths.
