Maui Haleakala or Kaanapali Zipline?
Posted: Wed March 5, 2008 10:47 PM UTC
Has anyone done this?

And, is it worth doing? It sounds like a blast but it sure is quite a bit of money. The Kaanapali Zipline is $145 but includes a meal. I imagine this one is better than the Haleakala Zipline (which costs less).

Thanks for your input!

In all of our trips to Hawai'i, zip lining has never interested me. However, I thought you might like this video. The guy in the video is HawaiiMagazine.com's editor and he is zipping across a 2,000-foot long line near Kapalua.

If zip lining is not your cup of tea, you can up the ante with an ultraliht flight!

There is a guy that offers ultralight (powered hang glider) flights from the Hana airport. You can fly like a bird over a large stretch of the Hana Coast!

Although I have not flown with this operator, I did fly with one over Kaua'i. We flew from Port Allen, over Waimea Canyon, out over the water, into Kalalau Valley, and all along Na Pali Coast. Simply spectacular! I would imagine it to be the same for Hana Coast.

Although it is pricey, it is unbeatable for the view and experience. I even rate it well above the helicopter tours we've taken over the islands.

I do not believe he has a website yet, but here's the number for reservations: 808-572-6557. If you do a search on YouTube for "ultralight flight Hana Maui", you'll see his wide-angle view of the aircraft in flight over Hana.

I have the same question about the Maui ziplines and now it looks like there are three of them on Maui (so many zips so little time). Are there two lines in the west now? Skyline EcoTours and this one: http://www.kapalua.com/adventures/on-resort-adventures/mountain-outpost/zip-lines/ So confusing. Anyway. Which ones would people recommend? Should I really do both Haleakala and the west?

I went "ziiipin'" on Kauai for the first time last summer and would absolutely say the cost was worth it! Or maybe you're so pumped with adrenalin you forget how much you forked over for the fun. If you're lucky enough to find that you love it, you might want to try the longer lines...they come with the bonus off-roading Pinzgauer ride. ;)

We are just back from Maui and did the Skyline Eco-Adventures zipline on the slopes of Haleakala. There are 5 "zips" and 1 suspension bridge to cross. We had a really good experience as "first-timers" and the guides were very patient with the nervous one -- me! It was a good introduction to zip-lining.

We did not do the Kapalua one (which is also referred to as Kaanapali). It is still "under construction" meaning it is more rugged than the one on Haleakala. You need to ride in four-wheel drive vehicles to get from one place to another. Evidently there are also more zip-lines to cross on this one.

The Haleakala one took about 2 hours from suiting up to returning to the parking lot. The Kapalua one takes longer (and as noted, costs more). The conceirge at our condo suggested we would be happier with the one we chose and we were fine with that. (She may have noted my nervousness, too)

Have fun!
