| Santo Domingo | How do i find directions to punta cana from santo domingo? Posted: Wed March 5, 2008 10:19 PM UTC
Hi,I just booked a trip to the grand oasis punta cana and the flight is to santo domingo airport. I did not realize it was 3-4 hours away! I have rented a car (big van for my family of 8) but cannot find directions anywhere.
Any advice? |

If you're in the US you can buy a Dominican Rep. map at a bookstore like Border's. You might want to try Google maps as well.
When you leave the airport there is one highway and you can either go Left (West) into the city of Santo Domingo, or turn Right (East) which heads out to Higuey and then Punta Cana. It's pretty basic as there aren't too many main highways.

Texasdave is right on the money. I looked at a Dominican forum I frequent and what they recommend is you take a taxi because driving in DR isn't for everyone (I'm Dominican and I don't drive there). However, I e-mailed some people and asked for directions, as I was unsuccessful with Google maps. I'll come back to you when I hear from them.
BTW, the highways should be well signed because you're going to a very big tourist town.

Yes, from SD you go east. Here's what I read from a 2006 DR-roadmap: Take Highway 3 east and look for signs to Boca Chica, San Pedro De Macoris, La Romana or Higuey. Stay on Highway 3 for about 150 km until you meet Highway 4 and then go north to Higuey. From Higuey there is about 50 km to Punta Cana and you must go east again. First with road 105 to Otra Banda and then road 106 to Punta Cana.
As Mariel wrote, driving in DR could be very hectic. Be careful.

there's only 1 hwy east bound.Little confusing around Higuey. You should stop there and visit the Basilica anyway.

The car rental place will be able to provide you with a map. Just drive east, follow the signs to Boca Chica, then San Pedro de Macorix. Keep on following that road until you get to San Rafael del Yuma. Then take 4 north to Higuey. After that take 4 east to Punta Cana. I'm attaching a website address with a map. Don't go north to 4 before this because I personally found the roads very confusing as there is some construction going on and they're not well marked. Plus...you'd miss lots of ocean views.
