Welcome to Houston!
ZaZa itself is a very vibrant place at the moment on the weekends. You are staying pretty close to downtown and just off the lightrail line. You could take the lightrail north to midtown and downtown, which has quite a few bars and clubs. The Continental Club in midtown always has live music. Its right on the lightrail line as well.

If you have a car, you should try to get to the Montrose. Lots of good bars along Westheimer between Shepherd and Midtown (about Main) like Catbird's, Cafe Brazil, Numbers, etc. There are also several along Montrose Boulevard itself around Richmond (The Proletariat), as well as a few on West Gray east of Shepherd (Cecil's and Sherlock's) and Waugh north of Westheimer (Rudyard's). A lot of the ones I've mentioned typically have live music. Rudyard's is my personal favorite, and there's usually a band playing upstairs, but that may just be me.

Welcome to VT...
If you are looking for a place to enjoy some of Houston's 25-40 year old crowd, I can recommend my friend's bar (XO) it is located at 2611 San Jacinto (cross-street McGowen). At the door, ask for Joe Beck, and tell him "Skivvy" sent you. Make sure you lay on a thick Australian accent, and mention Rugby... that should cover you for a drink or two.
