Hello, I've done a little research before asking this question just incase my question was already answered. I'm coming to Koper in May by cruise ship and staying for 1 day, wondering if there are any sights/cities to see that are near Koper and don't require a car. I like taking the train. I prefer doing things as a local would vs as a tourist. Any events/festivals happening? (7May to be exact). I always try to learn a few key phrases to converse with the locals but am wondering if English is widely spoken?

Piran is a beautiful seaside town not far from Koper. There are several buses every day between these places. There are lots of pages about Piran and Koper here on VT.

Thank you. I did look at things to do in Koper and nothing caught my eye which is why I was looking for something nearby. I will continue my research, thank you again.

Koper is full of palaces and churches. It has a beautiful main square. I think it's a nice town. There's a VTer who has a page of Koper with lots of tips. i think his name is Willetword.

Piran should be 40 minutes far from Koper by bus. It's a nice place to visit. I like it a lot.

I don't like to drive.
I was looking at taking the train to Ljubljana, looks like it would take about 2.5 hours, are the trains dependable and on schedule? Would hate to miss my ship out of Kopor. Been talking to people who are on my sailing and they are talking about going to Lake Bled, looks like it is doable within the time frame that we will be in port?

You can reach Ljubljana in an hour if you rent a car.And another 35 minutes to Bled. The train is slow and you definitely won't have enough time for Ljubljana or Bled.

You'd better visit Piran, Secovlje salt pans and Izola or Koper.
There are also organized trips to Skocjan caves which is in my opinion the best option.
