Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Sydney DayTripper
Posted: Tue March 4, 2008 03:42 PM UTC
Hello,
I will be at Sydney this 29-30 March, only 1 night before fly back home at Sunday afternoon. Therefore I am going to optimalized my time in Sydney. So, I have some question to ask:
1. I found out that DayTripper ticket is a value thing to have for Sydney visitors, but is it true that with only one DayTripper ticket I can hop on to some ferries trip, cityrail and bus journey in a day? I mean, after I use that ticket to my trip to Manly, I can use it again for my trip to Milson's Point?
2. Is there any TransitShop in Central Station? If there is, is that shop sell DayTripper?
3. Is it safe to walk alone to Circular Quay and Opera House after 10 pm? Especially for woman?
4. Can I take picture inside St Mary's Cathedral and Queen Victoria Building?
5. Where can I find the best meatpie in Sydney? I am curious about meatpie after saw Sweeney Todd ;D
I am looking forward to your reply. Thank you very much in advance.
Cheers,
Ingka

1) I think day trippers cost about $16 you can use all the buses and trains and most ferries, the normal yellow and green Manly ferry, not the fast jet cat.
2) The ticket offices at central station should be able to sell day trippers or the bus driver on any bus or the ticket office for the ferry
3) It should be quite safe to walk around circular quat and the Opera house after 10pm as there are always a lot of people there, however I would avoid walking up george street or around the smaller streets in The Rocks.
4)Some of the best meat pies come from small bakeries that only locals know, but the most famous ones are probably available form Harry's Cafe de wheels in Woolloomooloo.

Hope this helps :-)
5) I dont think you can take photos in the cathedral (or you have to ask special permission) but you definately can take photos in the queen victoria building.

Hi We stayed at Manly a few years ago and purchased the Sydney Pass ( I think that is what it was called) at Manly Wharf, entitled us to traditional ferry ride to Circular Quay and return trip plus city train and bus, great value, I expect it would include the ferry to Milsons Point.

I went to school at Milsons Point and wathched the Opera House being built, I had finished school (8 years) and it was not finished.

As for visiting Milsons Point you can take the ferry, could I suggest you take the ferry from Circular Quay to Milsons Point, get off and have a look around the area, Luna Park, Admiraldity House, etc etc, great opportunity to take photos of Opera House, Bridge and city. You could walk back to the city across the Harbour Bridge walkway( road level), it is free of charge, steps on side of bridgenear Milsons Point rail station , left side facing Opera House and when you get to the city you will leave the bridge on steps close to Old Sydney in the Rocks area.

If you stay on the Ferry to Misons Point it will continue under the Harbour Bridge, and go to Lavender Bay jetty then cross the harbour to Balmain jetty then onto Darling Harbour and then back under the bridge to Circular Quay. This is a great little trip on one of the smaller ferries and very cheap if not included on your pass.

I lived in Sydney for 27 years and return regularly, the city is as safe as any large city, just keep out of dark lanes, red light areas and make sure there are other people in the street, do not walk in parks at night.

Enjoy your stay,
Mike

There's another harrys cafe de wheels stand down next to the tram line & Paddy McGuires, cnr George st & Hay St, near Central.
Their pies are awesome, just make sure you get them with the lot (mashed potato, mushy peas & gravy). YUM!

You should be right walking round Circ. Quay & the Rocks that time, but as someone said before, stay away from the parks, dark alleys. Just use common sense and you'll be okay.

Hello Ingka,

I have just posted a notice about a VT Meeting on Saturday 29 March. If you are interested, please join us!!

Member dcmanicad, from the Philippines is working in Sydney until the end of May, and so I am organising this meeting to welcome him, and give him a chance to meet other members while he is here.

MEETING TIME: 10:45am
MEETING PLACE: Wharf 4 at Circular Quay

The plan is to get a Ferry to Watson's Bay and have lunch there.

Alternatively, we could get the ferry to Manly and have lunch over there.

You are welcome to join us!
