Totnes Self Contained Accommodation
Posted: Tue March 4, 2008 01:55 PM UTC
I'm going to be staying in Totnes with my wife and daughter for about three months this Autumn and I am wondering if anybody knows the best way to go about looking for a place rent.
By the way, I'm from the US and I'm not exactly sure what "self-contained accomodation" means!

Thanks for any replies!

hi there

my interpretation of self contained is:

own entrance( may be through a larger shared entrance if flats)
own kitchen, bathroom & living & sleeping areas - so you can basically do what you would do at home

Avoid Shared Facilities if at all possible
Hope you enjoy Totnes and do try to see some of the surrounding countryside if you can - Devon Cornwall and Somerset are all lovely places

Self-contained does indeed mean that you are entirely separate to anyone else's accommodation (although you may be part of the same building).

Google for 'estate agents totnes' to bring up a number of such agents locally (houses/flats to let are most often let though these (they also sell property) although some people let privately). Renting somewhere through an agent will bring you some additional security in law though, so it is to be preferred.

Examples include:

http://www.bradleys-estate-agents.co.uk/
http://www.fulfords.co.uk/

amongst several others. You may be able to get onto the agents' mailing lists before you come to the UK (email them with your requirements), but it might be more sensible to budget for a couple of weeks' stay in a holiday cottage or some such so that you can view potential property before you sign up.

You will also find that some holiday properties will be available for short-term rentals from September/October, so this will widen your choice somewhat.

Private rentals appear on sites such as this one: http://exeter.gumtree.com/exeter/00/18068300.html

Google 'totnes short term rentals' for more.
