Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Boston Don't know where to get help on this question!
Posted: Tue March 4, 2008 12:47 AM UTC
My mom was one of eleven kids from Dorchester.... during WWII my mom and five of her brothers all joined various US Armed services. All went in and all came out!

Family history as passed down to us was this: somewhere in Boston there was either a park or a square or some type of memorial that had bricks or some such plaque for those families in the Boston area that had the most kids in the service. And Apparently my Grandmother had one of these bricks / plaques, whatever... made in her honor since she surely had tons of kids contributing to the war effort.

We are having a family reunion in July this summer and we want to find this square, park, whatever it is --- IF it still exists.

I don't know how to BEGIN to find it. Wouldn't know where to look...

Any ideas?

THANKS!

I got curious and did a Google - found something in Medford ... is this good?

If not, I would try several iterations of Google searches ... sometimes you strike gold!

That was pretty good! That site is for vets.

From what I remember my mom telling me, this memorial (whatever!) is really for the mothers... not for the soldiers... it's for the mom's that sacraficed their kids for the war effort.

I think that the Medford group might be able to help me find it though. Maybe I will call them tomorrow!

THANKS!!!

Hi Patty! There is a WWII memorial in South Boston: http://www.storyofboston.com/articles/south_boston_world_war_ii_memo/ but like you say, I think that may be more for soldiers than families. There is also a park in Cambridge called "Gold Star Mothers" which sounds more like what you describe. It's fairly new: http://www.yelp.com/biz/gold-star-mothers-park-cambridge Hope this helps!

They did a special report on the "hero squares" in Dorchester, check it out at:

www.dotnews.com/riceposthonorssailor.html

While that's not exactly what you want, it gets you a contact right in the neightbourhood. If you can't get to that page, the www.dotnews.com will get you to the on-line version of the paper, and all the contacts you could hope for.

Want to thank all you guys! I've gotten some good organizations to contact from your responses.

I wonder if they took the monument down! it's kind of exciting trying to find it!

THANKS AGAIN!

Hey, Patty. You probably already thought of this, but I was thinking that if you contact some of the folks at these other parks they may know the place that you're looking for--probably would actually.

If all else fails, you might want to give the New England Historic Genealogical Society a call. They might be able to help:

Good luck!
