Vernazza drive or take a train
Posted: Mon March 3, 2008 09:22 PM UTC
My husband and I will be traveling from Verona to Cinque Terre, staying in Vernazza. We'd like to drive and park a car when we get there. We do understand one would not use a car in that area. Best route to go if we drive? Or should we take the train? Have checked some schedules, looks like we'd have to change trains a couple times. Best to connect thru La Spezia or Genoa? Thanks

Either Genoa or La Spezia are good connections, although since you're coming from the north, Genoa may be shorter (assuming you're also changing in Milan).

My recommendation would be to take the train, despite the changes. You save yourself the challenges of navigating, driving and parking as well as the cost of gas.

If you're set on driving, though, your hotel/apartment rental company can recommend public parking, although you might have to walk down into the center of Vernazza (depending on where you're staying).

Enjoy the 5 terre! It's one of my favorite places on earth!

I don't know about the trains but I'm sure several people will answer that question. If you drive, you will probably want the A22 south, connectto S420 and then to A15 to La Spezia. It's a gorgeous drive. If you want the scenic (and cheaper) route, connect with the S62 just south of Parma. It will take longer but no tolls and it's a Michelin "green" route.

You can check times at http://www.viamichelin.com/

There is pay parking at Vernazza.

Take that train, by car is much more complicated !
You will have a small car-park outside of the village of Vernazza 5 min to walk there. I am not sure about parking-fees, normally you have to pay a lot for such parking !
The only place in 5terre that has car-trafic and parking-spaces in front of your hotel or on the beach is Monterosso al mare,BUT it is also the least romantic of all 5 villages.

Hello
In Vernazza and in CT you don't use the car but travel between the towns by
walking - boats - trains. IF you have the car and use the car after stay in CT
From Verona go to Mantova (speed way) take the road Mantova to Parma and there
take the speed way to La Spezia. Leave the car in La Spezia or if you like go
to Vernazza by car (it take 45 minute - by train 17 min.)There find parking
fee outside 800 meter but connected by shuttle bus every half hours with town
I suggest take the train to Milano and there train to CT (intercity) go down
in Monterosso and take local train to Vernazza . Can you look at www.trenitalia.com ( of course if you don't rent a car)
