I'm going to Cape town at the end of the month and was wondering if anyone can reccomend a cheap, reliable car hire company?

The only company I've ever used to rent a car in South Africa, is Avis. They are one of the biggest (if not the biggest) company in SA. You'll find them confeniantly located at (or close to) airports and the larger tourist places. You can make a reservation online at www.avis.co.za. The bottom of their range that you can hire is a citi golf which will go for about R250 (more or less what we paid for one in December in Durban). If you have any further questions, just mail me! Good luck planning your trip!

We used Avis a lot and they are excellent. Lately I find Budget cheaper and the service is just as good if not better than Avis. Hertz has also been around for a long time.

We always use Nova Car Hire when we go to South Africa now... we have found them to be a lot cheaper than other firms and they are dependable!

I found a company called blue dot car hire (www.bluedotcarhire.com) they offer older vehicles and consequently a much cheaper rate. I haven't used them before, so can't comment on their service.
Have a good trip. Kim

If you are just going to drive around CPT that could work. Check with them what happens if the car breaks down. If they are only in CPt and you drive further out of Cape town it might be a problem to get a replacement.

I agree. I would want a newer, more reliable car for travelling... South Africa is BIG!

Lets define "older" their cars are 18 months or older. I was just chatting to a friend and saying that the last time I drove a car that was that "young" was in 1996! I've just driven from Natal to George in a 5 year old car and I did not have any issues.

Well that's not old to me! Old to me is a bumper falling off and wonky steering ;)

the only time we drive a new car is when we hire one. There are tons of old cars on the roads and they seem to all make it. But to be stuck somewhere and you can't get a replacement car can make your life very miserable. It happened to us with an Avis car once in the Cape but because it was Avis we had a replacement in no time. Even the new cars can break down. I'm all for the smaller places getting a break because I think the big companies are making mega bugs out of us.
